[520] Then those bhikkhunīs said to Mahāpajāpatī Gotamī: "The noble lady is not fully ordained (upasampannā), but we are fully ordained; for it has been laid down by the Blessed One thus: 'Bhikkhunīs are to be given full ordination (upasampadā) by bhikkhus.'" Then Mahāpajāpatī Gotamī approached the Venerable Ānanda; having approached and paid homage to the Venerable Ānanda, she stood to one side. Standing to one side, Mahāpajāpatī Gotamī said to the Venerable Ānanda: "Venerable Ānanda, these bhikkhunīs have said to me thus: 'The noble lady is not fully ordained, but we are fully ordained; for it has been laid down by the Blessed One thus: "Bhikkhunīs are to be given full ordination by bhikkhus."'" Then the Venerable Ānanda approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, the Venerable Ānanda said to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, Mahāpajāpatī Gotamī says thus: 'Venerable Ānanda, these bhikkhunīs have said to me thus: "The noble lady is not fully ordained, but we are fully ordained; for it has been laid down by the Blessed One thus: 'Bhikkhunīs are to be given full ordination by bhikkhus.'"'" "Ānanda, from the moment the eight principles of respect (garudhamma) were accepted by Mahāpajāpatī Gotamī, from that very moment she was fully ordained."
