[521] Then Mahāpajāpatī Gotamī approached the Venerable Ānanda; having approached and paid homage to the Venerable Ānanda, she stood to one side. Standing to one side, Mahāpajāpatī Gotamī said this to the Venerable Ānanda: "Venerable Ānanda, I ask one boon of the Blessed One: it would be good, venerable sir, if the Blessed One would allow paying homage, rising up in greeting, the gesture of reverence (añjalikamma), and the performance of proper duties (sāmīcikamma) between bhikkhus and bhikkhunīs according to seniority." Then the Venerable Ānanda approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, the Venerable Ānanda said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, Mahāpajāpatī Gotamī says this: 'Venerable Ānanda, I ask one boon of the Blessed One: it would be good, venerable sir, if the Blessed One would allow paying homage, rising up in greeting, the gesture of reverence, and the performance of proper duties between bhikkhus and bhikkhunīs according to seniority.'" "It is impossible, Ānanda, there is no occasion, that the Tathāgata would allow paying homage, rising up in greeting, the gesture of reverence, and the performance of proper duties toward women (mātugāma). For even these adherents of other sects (aññatitthiyā), whose teaching is badly proclaimed, will not perform paying homage, rising up in greeting, the gesture of reverence, and the performance of proper duties toward women — how then will the Tathāgata allow paying homage, rising up in greeting, the gesture of reverence, and the performance of proper duties toward women?" Then the Blessed One, having given a talk on the Dhamma with reference to that origin, with reference to that occasion, addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, paying homage, rising up in greeting, the gesture of reverence, and the performance of proper duties should not be done toward women. Whoever should do so commits an offence of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa)."
