[558] Now at that time the bhikkhunīs of the group of six (chabbaggiyā) wore robes entirely blue, wore robes entirely yellow, wore robes entirely red, wore robes entirely crimson, wore robes entirely black, wore robes dyed entirely orange (mahāraṅgaratta), wore robes dyed entirely pink (mahānāmaratta); they wore robes with uncut borders, wore robes with long borders, wore robes with floral borders, wore robes with fruit-patterned borders; they wore jackets (kañcuka), they wore headdresses (tirīṭa). People criticized, complained, and spread it about, saying, "… just like householder women who enjoy sensual pleasures."
They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, a bhikkhunī should not wear robes entirely blue, should not wear robes entirely yellow, should not wear robes entirely red, should not wear robes entirely crimson, should not wear robes entirely black, should not wear robes dyed entirely orange, should not wear robes dyed entirely pink; she should not wear robes with uncut borders, should not wear robes with long borders, should not wear robes with floral borders, should not wear robes with fruit-patterned borders; she should not wear a jacket, should not wear a headdress. Whoever should wear one commits an offence of wrongdoing (dukkaṭa)."
