[622] Then the elder bhikkhus said to the Venerable Ānanda: "Friend Ānanda, this was a wrong-doing (dukkaṭa) on your part, that you did not ask the Blessed One: 'Venerable sir, which are the lesser and minor training rules (khuddānukhuddakāni sikkhāpadāni)?' Confess that wrong-doing."
"Venerable sirs, it was through lack of mindfulness (asatiyā) that I did not ask the Blessed One: 'Venerable sir, which are the lesser and minor training rules?' I do not see that as a wrong-doing; nevertheless, out of faith in the venerable ones, I confess that wrong-doing."
"Friend Ānanda, this too was a wrong-doing on your part, that you sewed the Blessed One's rains-bathing cloth (vassikasāṭikā) after stepping on it. Confess that wrong-doing."
"Venerable sirs, it was not out of disrespect that I sewed the Blessed One's rains-bathing cloth after stepping on it. I do not see that as a wrong-doing; nevertheless, out of faith in the venerable ones, I confess that wrong-doing."
"Friend Ānanda, this too was a wrong-doing on your part, that you had the women venerate the Blessed One's body first, so that as they wept the Blessed One's body was stained with their tears. Confess that wrong-doing."
"Venerable sirs, thinking, 'Let these women not be here at an improper time,' I had the women venerate the Blessed One's body first. I do not see that as a wrong-doing; nevertheless, out of faith in the venerable ones, I confess that wrong-doing."
"Friend Ānanda, this too was a wrong-doing on your part, that when an obvious sign was being made by the Blessed One, when an obvious hint was being given, you did not beseech the Blessed One: 'May the Blessed One remain for the eon (kappa); may the Fortunate One remain for the eon, for the welfare of the many, for the happiness of the many, out of compassion for the world, for the good, welfare, and happiness of devas and human beings.' Confess that wrong-doing."
"Venerable sirs, it was with a mind (citta) possessed by Māra that I did not beseech the Blessed One: 'May the Blessed One remain for the eon; may the Fortunate One remain for the eon, for the welfare of the many, for the happiness of the many, out of compassion for the world, for the good, welfare, and happiness of devas and human beings.' I do not see that as a wrong-doing; nevertheless, out of faith in the venerable ones, I confess that wrong-doing."
"Friend Ānanda, this too was a wrong-doing on your part, that you exerted yourself to obtain the going forth (pabbajjā) for women in the Dhamma and Discipline proclaimed by the Tathāgata. Confess that wrong-doing."
"Venerable sirs, thinking, 'This Mahāpajāpatī Gotamī is the Blessed One's maternal aunt, his nurturer, his fosterer, the giver of milk — when his mother died, she suckled the Blessed One,' I exerted myself to obtain the going forth for women in the Dhamma and Discipline proclaimed by the Tathāgata. I do not see that as a wrong-doing; nevertheless, out of faith in the venerable ones, I confess that wrong-doing."
