[623] Now at that time the Venerable Purāṇa was wandering on tour in Dakkhiṇāgiri together with a large Saṅgha of bhikkhus, about five hundred bhikkhus. Then the Venerable Purāṇa — the Dhamma and the Vinaya having been communally recited (saṅgīta) by the elder bhikkhus — having dwelt in Dakkhiṇāgiri for as long as he wished, approached Rājagaha, the Veḷuvana, the Squirrels' Feeding Ground, where the elder bhikkhus were; having approached and exchanged friendly greetings with the elder bhikkhus, he sat down to one side. As the Venerable Purāṇa was seated to one side, the elder bhikkhus said this to him: "Friend Purāṇa, the Dhamma and the Vinaya have been communally recited by the elders. Submit yourself to that recitation."
"Friends, the Dhamma and the Vinaya have been well recited by the elder bhikkhus. Nevertheless, just as I have heard it in the presence of the Blessed One and received it in his presence, just so shall I bear it in mind."
