[624] Then the Venerable Ānanda said this to the elder bhikkhus: "Venerable sirs, at the time of his final Nibbāna (parinibbāna) the Blessed One said this to me: 'Well then, Ānanda, after my passing let the Saṅgha impose the brahma-penalty (brahmadaṇḍa) upon the bhikkhu Channa.'"
"But friend Ānanda, did you ask the Blessed One: 'What then, venerable sir, is the brahma-penalty?'"
"Venerable sirs, I did ask the Blessed One: 'What then, venerable sir, is the brahma-penalty?' [He said:] 'Ānanda, the bhikkhu Channa may say whatever he wishes; the bhikkhu Channa is not to be spoken to, not to be exhorted, not to be instructed by the bhikkhus.'"
"Well then, friend Ānanda, you yourself impose the brahma-penalty upon the bhikkhu Channa."
"How, venerable sirs, am I to impose the brahma-penalty upon the bhikkhu Channa? That bhikkhu is fierce and harsh."
"Well then, friend Ānanda, go together with many bhikkhus."
"Yes, venerable sirs," the Venerable Ānanda replied in assent to the elder bhikkhus, and together with a great Saṅgha of bhikkhus, some five hundred bhikkhus, having gone by boat upstream to Kosambī, he disembarked from the boat and sat down at the foot of a certain tree not far from the pleasure garden of King Udena.
