[627] Then the Venerable Ānanda approached the Ghositārāma; having approached, he sat down on the seat prepared for him. Then the Venerable Channa approached the Venerable Ānanda; having approached and paid homage to the Venerable Ānanda, he sat down to one side. As the Venerable Channa was seated to one side, the Venerable Ānanda said this to him: "Friend Channa, the supreme penalty (brahmadaṇḍa) has been decreed upon you by the Saṅgha."
"But what, Venerable Ānanda, is the supreme penalty?"
"You, friend Channa, a bhikkhu, may say whatever you wish; but you are not to be spoken to, not to be admonished, not to be instructed by the bhikkhus."
"Am I not destroyed, Venerable Ānanda, by just this much — in that I am neither to be spoken to, nor admonished, nor instructed by the bhikkhus?" And he fell down fainting on that very spot.
Then the Venerable Channa, distressed, ashamed, and repelled by the supreme penalty, dwelling alone, withdrawn, diligent, ardent (ātāpī), and resolute, before long realized for himself with direct knowledge, in this very life, that unsurpassed consummation of the holy life for the sake of which sons of good family rightly go forth from the household life into homelessness, and having entered upon it, he dwelt therein. He knew directly: "Birth (jāti) is destroyed, the holy life has been lived, what had to be done has been done, there is nothing further for this state of being." And the Venerable Channa became one among the arahants.
Then the Venerable Channa, having attained arahantship, approached the Venerable Ānanda; having approached, he said this to the Venerable Ānanda: "Venerable Ānanda, allay now the supreme penalty for me."
"Friend Channa, from the very moment you realized arahantship, from that very moment the supreme penalty was allayed for you."
