[632] Now at that time the Vajjiputtaka bhikkhus of Vesālī, on that Uposatha day, filled a bronze vessel (kaṃsacāṭi) with water, set it in the midst of the Saṅgha of bhikkhus, and said to the Vesālī lay followers (upāsakas) as they came, one after another: "Give, friends, to the Saṅgha — a kahāpaṇa, or a half-kahāpaṇa, or a pāda, or a māsaka coin; there will be something to be done for the Saṅgha by way of requisites."
When this was said, the venerable Yasa Kākaṇḍakaputta said this to the Vesālī lay followers: "Do not, friends, give to the Saṅgha a kahāpaṇa, or a half-kahāpaṇa, or a pāda, or a māsaka coin. Gold and silver (jātarūparajata) are not allowable for the ascetics who are sons of the Sakyan. The ascetics, sons of the Sakyan, do not consent to gold and silver; the ascetics, sons of the Sakyan, do not accept gold and silver; the ascetics, sons of the Sakyan, have laid aside gems and gold; the ascetics, sons of the Sakyan, have abandoned gold and silver."
Yet even though they were addressed thus by the venerable Yasa Kākaṇḍakaputta, the Vesālī lay followers nevertheless gave to the Saṅgha kahāpaṇas, half-kahāpaṇas, pādas, and māsaka coins.
Then, when that night had passed, the Vajjiputtaka bhikkhus of Vesālī, having set out portions of that money (hirañña) according to the number of bhikkhus, distributed it. Then the Vajjiputtaka bhikkhus of Vesālī said this to the venerable Yasa Kākaṇḍakaputta: "Friend Yasa, this is your portion of the money." "Friends, I have no portion of the money; I do not consent to money."
