[633] Then the Vajjiputtaka bhikkhus of Vesālī said: "Friends, this Yasa Kākaṇḍakaputta abuses and reviles lay followers who have faith and confidence, and causes their loss of confidence. Come now, let us impose on him the act of reconciliation (paṭisāraṇīyakamma)." And they imposed the act of reconciliation upon him. Then the Venerable Yasa Kākaṇḍakaputta said to the Vajjiputtaka bhikkhus of Vesālī: "Friends, it has been laid down by the Blessed One that a companion messenger (anudūta) is to be given to a bhikkhu upon whom the act of reconciliation has been imposed. Friends, give me a bhikkhu as companion messenger." Then the Vajjiputtaka bhikkhus of Vesālī, having agreed upon one bhikkhu, gave him to the Venerable Yasa Kākaṇḍakaputta as companion messenger. Then the Venerable Yasa Kākaṇḍakaputta, having entered Vesālī together with the companion-messenger bhikkhu, said to the lay followers of Vesālī: "It is said that I abuse and revile you venerable lay followers who have faith and confidence, and that I cause loss of confidence — I, who say of what is not Dhamma, 'This is not Dhamma'; who say of what is Dhamma, 'This is Dhamma'; who say of what is not Vinaya, 'This is not Vinaya'; who say of what is Vinaya, 'This is Vinaya.'"
