[634] "On one occasion, friends, the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthi, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's park. There the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus: 'Bhikkhus, there are these four corruptions (upakkilesa) of the moon and sun, corrupted by which corruptions the moon and sun do not glow, do not shine, do not radiate. What four? Cloud, bhikkhus, is a corruption of the moon and sun, corrupted by which corruption the moon and sun do not glow, do not shine, do not radiate. Fog (mahikā), bhikkhus, is a corruption of the moon and sun, corrupted by which corruption the moon and sun do not glow, do not shine, do not radiate. Smoke and dust, bhikkhus, is a corruption of the moon and sun, corrupted by which corruption the moon and sun do not glow, do not shine, do not radiate. Rāhu, lord of the asuras, bhikkhus, is a corruption of the moon and sun, corrupted by which corruption the moon and sun do not glow, do not shine, do not radiate. These, bhikkhus, are the four corruptions of the moon and sun, corrupted by which corruptions the moon and sun do not glow, do not shine, do not radiate.
"'Even so, bhikkhus, there are these four corruptions of ascetics and brahmins, corrupted by which corruptions some ascetics and brahmins do not glow, do not shine, do not radiate. What four? There are, bhikkhus, some ascetics and brahmins who drink liquor and drink fermented brew, who do not refrain from drinking liquor and fermented brew. This, bhikkhus, is the first corruption of ascetics and brahmins, corrupted by which corruption some ascetics and brahmins do not glow, do not shine, do not radiate. Furthermore, bhikkhus, some ascetics and brahmins engage in sexual intercourse, and do not refrain from sexual intercourse. This, bhikkhus, is the second corruption of ascetics and brahmins, corrupted by which corruption some ascetics and brahmins do not glow, do not shine, do not radiate. Furthermore, bhikkhus, some ascetics and brahmins consent to gold and silver, and do not refrain from receiving gold and silver. This, bhikkhus, is the third corruption of ascetics and brahmins, corrupted by which corruption some ascetics and brahmins do not glow, do not shine, do not radiate. Furthermore, bhikkhus, some ascetics and brahmins make their living by wrong livelihood, and do not refrain from wrong livelihood. This, bhikkhus, is the fourth corruption of ascetics and brahmins, corrupted by which corruption some ascetics and brahmins do not glow, do not shine, do not radiate. These, bhikkhus, are the four corruptions of ascetics and brahmins, corrupted by which corruptions some ascetics and brahmins do not glow, do not shine, do not radiate.'
"This, friends, is what the Blessed One said. And having said this, the Fortunate One, the Teacher, further said this:"
