Some ascetics and brahmins, defiled by lust and hatred (rāga, dosa),
persons shrouded by ignorance (avijjā), delighting in pleasing forms,
drink liquor and fermented drink, engage in sexual intercourse,
and accept silver and gold — the unknowing ones;
some ascetics and brahmins live by wrong livelihood.
These have been declared corruptions (upakkilesā) by the Buddha, kinsman of the sun —
corruptions by which some ascetics and brahmins are defiled:
they do not shine, they do not glow — impure, dust-covered beasts,
enveloped by darkness, slaves of craving (taṇhā), bound to the leash [of craving];
they swell the dreadful charnel ground; they take up renewed existence.
