[638] "Friends, on one occasion the Blessed One, right there at Rājagaha, with reference to the Venerable Upananda the Sakyan (Upananda Sakyaputta), rejected gold and silver and laid down a training rule (sikkhāpada). So it seems that I, who speak thus, abuse and revile the venerable lay followers (upāsakā) who have faith and confidence, and cause them to lose confidence — I who say of what is not Dhamma, 'This is not Dhamma'; of what is Dhamma, 'This is Dhamma'; of what is not Vinaya, 'This is not Vinaya'; of what is Vinaya, 'This is Vinaya.'"
When this was said, the lay followers of Vesālī said to the Venerable Yasa Kākaṇḍakaputta: "Venerable sir, the master Yasa Kākaṇḍakaputta alone is an ascetic, a son of the Sakyan; all these are not ascetics, not sons of the Sakyan. Venerable sir, let the master Yasa Kākaṇḍakaputta dwell in Vesālī; we shall make effort on behalf of the master Yasa Kākaṇḍakaputta for robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicinal requisites for the sick."
Then the Venerable Yasa Kākaṇḍakaputta, having brought the lay followers of Vesālī to understanding, went to the monastery together with the bhikkhu who was the accompanying messenger (anudūta).
