[639] Then the Vajjiputtaka bhikkhus of Vesālī asked the companion-messenger (anudūta) bhikkhu: "Friend, have the lay followers (upāsakā) of Vesālī been asked for forgiveness by Yasa Kākaṇḍakaputta?"
"Friends, evil has been done to us by the lay followers: Yasa Kākaṇḍakaputta alone has been made an ascetic, a son of the Sakyan, while all of us have been made non-ascetics, not sons of the Sakyan."
Then the Vajjiputtaka bhikkhus of Vesālī [said]: "Friends, this Yasa Kākaṇḍakaputta, unauthorized by us, made a declaration to householders. Come now, let us carry out an act of suspension (ukkhepanīyakamma) against him." Wishing to carry out the act of suspension against him, they assembled.
Then the Venerable Yasa Kākaṇḍakaputta rose into the air and reappeared at Kosambī. Then the Venerable Yasa Kākaṇḍakaputta sent a messenger to the bhikkhus of Pāṭheyya and of Avanti and the Southern Route (Dakkhiṇāpatha), saying: "Let the venerable ones come; let us take up this legal question (adhikaraṇa) before what is not Dhamma shines forth and the Dhamma is thrust aside, before what is not Vinaya shines forth and the Vinaya is thrust aside; before those who speak what is not Dhamma become strong and those who speak Dhamma become weak, before those who speak what is not Vinaya become strong and those who speak Vinaya become weak."
