[646] Then the Saṅgha, wishing to decide that legal issue (adhikaraṇa), assembled. Then the Venerable Revata informed the Saṅgha: "Friends, let the Saṅgha listen to me. If we settle this legal issue here, it may be that the bhikkhus who originated it would reopen it for a fresh formal act. If it is the right time for the Saṅgha, let the Saṅgha settle this legal issue in the very place where this legal issue arose."
Then the elder bhikkhus went to Vesālī, wishing to decide that legal issue. Now at that time the Saṅgha elder of the whole earth was named Sabbakāmī, one hundred and twenty years since his higher ordination, a co-resident pupil (saddhivihārika) of the Venerable Ānanda, and he was residing at Vesālī. Then the Venerable Revata said this to the Venerable Sambhūta Sāṇavāsī: "Friend, I shall go to the dwelling in which the Elder Sabbakāmī resides. You, quite early in the morning, should approach the Venerable Sabbakāmī and question him about these ten points." "Yes, venerable sir," the Venerable Sambhūta Sāṇavāsī assented to the Venerable Revata. Then the Venerable Revata went to the dwelling in which the Elder Sabbakāmī resided. A lodging had been prepared for the Venerable Sabbakāmī in the inner chamber, and one for the Venerable Revata at the entrance to the chamber. Then the Venerable Revata, thinking, "This elder is aged, and he is not lying down," did not lie down to sleep. The Venerable Sabbakāmī, thinking, "This bhikkhu is a visitor and is weary, and he is not lying down," did not lie down to sleep.
