[1018] "How many [rules of training] were laid down at Vesālī? How many were made at Rājagaha?
How many are there at Sāvatthī? How many were made at Āḷavī?
How many were laid down at Kosambī? How many are spoken of among the Sakkas?
How many were laid down among the Bhaggas? Being asked, declare that to me."
"Ten were laid down at Vesālī; twenty-one were made at Rājagaha;
three hundred less six were all made at Sāvatthī;
six were laid down at Āḷavī; eight were made at Kosambī;
eight are spoken of among the Sakkas; three were laid down among the Bhaggas.
Those laid down at Vesālī — hear them as they are told:
sexual intercourse; [the destruction of] a human body; the superhuman [state];
the extra [robe] and the black [goats' wool];
the true [attainment]; the out-of-turn meal;
[except water and] tooth-wood; the naked ascetic;
and abuse among the bhikkhunīs — these ten were made at Vesālī.
Those laid down at Rājagaha — hear them as they are told:
taking what is not given, at Rājagaha; and the two groundless charges;
the two on schism as well; the inner robe;
money; thread; and by making [people] criticize;
the [meal] instigated [by a bhikkhunī] and the [alms-hall] food; the group meal; at the wrong time;
visiting [families]; bathing; the one under twenty;
having given a robe; [a bhikkhunī] standing giving directions — these were made at Rājagaha;
the mountain-top [festival] and wandering, right there; with the giving of consent — twenty-one.
Those laid down at Sāvatthī — hear them as they are told:
four pārājikas; the saṅghādisesas are sixteen;
the aniyatas are two; twenty-four nissaggiyas;
and one hundred and fifty-six are called the minor [rules];
ten blameworthy; seventy-two sekhiyas.
Three hundred less six were all made at Sāvatthī.
Those laid down at Āḷavī — hear them as they are told:
the hut; the silk; and sleeping [with the unordained];
in digging; 'Go, deity!' [the plants];
and they sprinkle [water] containing living beings —
these six were made at Āḷavī.
Those laid down at Kosambī — hear them as they are told:
the great dwelling; being difficult to admonish;
[evading with] something else; the door; and liquor;
disrespect; and legitimate [admonition];
with the milk-drink as the eighth.
Those laid down among the Sakkas — hear them as they are told:
goats' wool and the bowl;
the exhortation too, and medicine;
the needle, and the forest [lodging] —
these six pertain to Kapilavatthu.
Purification in water, and the exhortation,
are declared with regard to the bhikkhunīs.
Those laid down among the Bhaggas — hear them as they are told:
having kindled [a fire], they warm themselves;
with [a hand] soiled by food; [bowl-washing water] with grains of rice.
Four pārājikas; the saṅghādisesas are seven;
eight nissaggiyas; and thirty-two minor [rules];
two blameworthy; three sekhiyas — fifty-six —
were laid down in six cities by the Buddha, Kinsman of the Sun (Ādiccabandhu);
three hundred less six were all made at Sāvatthī
by the glorious Gotama."
