[1019] Upāli:
"What we asked of you, you have declared to us;
each of those has been answered by you, and not otherwise.
We ask you another question; come, pray tell us that:
the grave (garuka) and also the light (lahuka) [offense],
that with remainder (sāvasesa) and that without remainder (anavasesa),
the depraved (duṭṭhulla) and the not depraved (aduṭṭhulla),
and those [offenses incurred only] upon the third admonition (yāvatatiyakā),
the shared (sādhāraṇa) and the not shared (asādhāraṇa),
and the failings (vipatti), and by which means of settlement (samatha) they are settled —
explain all these as well.
Come, we shall hear your word."
The Blessed One:
"Thirty-one are those that are grave; eight herein are without remainder.
Those that are grave are depraved; those that are depraved — that is failure in virtue (sīlavipatti).
Pārājika and saṅghādisesa are called failure in virtue.
Thullaccaya, pācittiya, pāṭidesanīya, dukkaṭa,
and dubbhāsita — when one abuses another intending it in jest —
this is what is agreed upon as failure in conduct (ācāravipatti)."
