[1077] The examiner (anuvijjaka) should question the accuser (codaka): "Friend, as to your accusing this bhikkhu — of what do you accuse him? Do you accuse him of a failure in virtue (sīlavipatti), do you accuse him of a failure in conduct (ācāravipatti), do you accuse him of a failure in view (diṭṭhivipatti)?"
If he should say: "I accuse him of a failure in virtue, or I accuse him of a failure in conduct, or I accuse him of a failure in view," he should be asked: "But does the venerable one know a failure in virtue, does he know a failure in conduct, does he know a failure in view?"
If he should say: "Friend, I do know a failure in virtue, I know a failure in conduct, I know a failure in view," he should be asked: "But which, friend, is a failure in virtue, which is a failure in conduct, which is a failure in view?"
If he should say: "The four pārājikas and the thirteen saṅghādisesas — this is a failure in virtue; a thullaccaya, a pācittiya, a pāṭidesanīya, a dukkaṭa, a dubbhāsita — this is a failure in conduct; wrong view and an extremist view (antaggāhikā diṭṭhi) — this is a failure in view," he should be asked: "Friend, as to your accusing this bhikkhu — do you accuse him by what was seen, do you accuse him by what was heard, do you accuse him by suspicion?"
If he should say: "I accuse him by what was seen, or I accuse him by what was heard, or I accuse him by suspicion," he should be asked: "Friend, as to your accusing this bhikkhu by what was seen — what did you see? In what way did you see it? When did you see it? Where did you see it? Was he seen committing a pārājika? Was he seen committing a saṅghādisesa? Was he seen committing a thullaccaya? Was he seen committing a pācittiya? Was he seen committing a pāṭidesanīya? Was he seen committing a dukkaṭa? And where were you? And where was this bhikkhu? And what were you doing? And what was this bhikkhu doing?"
If he should say: "Friend, I do not accuse this bhikkhu by what was seen; rather, I accuse him by what was heard," he should be asked: "Friend, as to your accusing this bhikkhu by what was heard — what did you hear? In what way did you hear it? When did you hear it? Where did you hear it? Did you hear, 'He has committed a pārājika'? Did you hear, 'He has committed a saṅghādisesa'? Did you hear, 'He has committed a thullaccaya'? Did you hear, 'He has committed a pācittiya'? Did you hear, 'He has committed a pāṭidesanīya'? Did you hear, 'He has committed a dukkaṭa'? Did you hear, 'He has committed a dubbhāsita'? Did you hear it from a bhikkhu? Did you hear it from a bhikkhunī? Did you hear it from a sikkhamānā? Did you hear it from a sāmaṇera? Did you hear it from a sāmaṇerī? Did you hear it from a layman (upāsaka)? Did you hear it from a laywoman (upāsikā)? Did you hear it from kings? Did you hear it from royal ministers? Did you hear it from adherents of other sects (titthiya)? Did you hear it from disciples of adherents of other sects?"
If he should say: "Friend, I do not accuse this bhikkhu by what was heard; rather, I accuse him by suspicion," he should be asked: "Friend, as to your accusing this bhikkhu by suspicion — what do you suspect? In what way do you suspect it? When did you suspect it? Where did you suspect it? Do you suspect, 'He has committed a pārājika'? Do you suspect, 'He has committed a saṅghādisesa'? Do you suspect, 'He has committed a thullaccaya'? Do you suspect, 'He has committed a pācittiya'? Do you suspect, 'He has committed a pāṭidesanīya'? Do you suspect, 'He has committed a dukkaṭa'? Do you suspect, 'He has committed a dubbhāsita'? Do you suspect it having heard it from a bhikkhu? Do you suspect it having heard it from a bhikkhunī? Do you suspect it having heard it from a sikkhamānā? Do you suspect it having heard it from a sāmaṇera? Do you suspect it having heard it from a sāmaṇerī? Do you suspect it having heard it from a layman? Do you suspect it having heard it from a laywoman? Do you suspect it having heard it from kings? Do you suspect it having heard it from royal ministers? Do you suspect it having heard it from adherents of other sects? Do you suspect it having heard it from disciples of adherents of other sects?"
