[1098] "One should not follow a wrong course out of desire (chandāgati)": When one follows a wrong course out of desire, how does one follow a wrong course out of desire? Here, a certain one, thinking, "This person is my preceptor (upajjhāya), or my teacher (ācariya), or my co-resident pupil (saddhivihārika), or my pupil (antevāsika), or one who shares the same preceptor, or one who shares the same teacher, or an acquaintance, or a companion, or a relative and blood-kinsman" — out of sympathy for that person, out of protectiveness toward that person — explains what is not-Dhamma as Dhamma; explains Dhamma as not-Dhamma; explains what is not-Vinaya as Vinaya; explains Vinaya as not-Vinaya; explains what was not spoken, not uttered by the Tathāgata as spoken and uttered by the Tathāgata; explains what was spoken and uttered by the Tathāgata as not spoken, not uttered by the Tathāgata; explains what was not practiced by the Tathāgata as practiced by the Tathāgata; explains what was practiced by the Tathāgata as not practiced by the Tathāgata; explains what was not laid down by the Tathāgata as laid down by the Tathāgata; explains what was laid down by the Tathāgata as not laid down by the Tathāgata; explains what is no offense (anāpatti) as an offense (āpatti); explains an offense as no offense; explains a light offense as a heavy offense; explains a heavy offense as a light offense; explains an offense with remainder as an offense without remainder; explains an offense without remainder as an offense with remainder; explains a grave offense as an offense that is not grave; explains an offense that is not grave as a grave offense. Following a wrong course out of desire on these eighteen grounds, he practices for the harm of many people, for the unhappiness of many people, for the ruin of many people, for the harm and suffering of devas and human beings. Following a wrong course out of desire on these eighteen grounds, he maintains himself dug up and injured; he is blameworthy and censurable by the wise, and he generates much demerit. One following a wrong course out of desire follows a wrong course out of desire thus.
