[1143] For how many persons do the spreadings of the kaṭhina (kaṭhinatthāra) not take effect? For how many persons do the spreadings of the kaṭhina take effect? For three persons the spreadings of the kaṭhina do not take effect; for three persons the spreadings of the kaṭhina take effect. For which three persons do the spreadings of the kaṭhina not take effect? One standing outside the boundary (sīmā) expresses his approval (anumodati); one, expressing approval, does not utter speech; one, uttering speech, does not make another understand. For these three persons the spreadings of the kaṭhina do not take effect. For which three persons do the spreadings of the kaṭhina take effect? One standing within the boundary expresses his approval; one, expressing approval, utters speech; one, uttering speech, makes another understand. For these three persons the spreadings of the kaṭhina take effect.
