[1147] "The spreading of the kathina (kaṭhinatthāra) should be understood" — if kathina cloth has arisen for the Saṅgha, how should the Saṅgha proceed? How should the one who spreads it (atthāraka) proceed? How should those who express appreciation (anumodaka) proceed?
The Saṅgha should give [the cloth] to the bhikkhu who is to spread the kathina by means of a formal act with a motion and one announcement (ñattidutiyakamma).
That bhikkhu who spreads the kathina should, on that very day, wash it, press it, plan it out, cut it, sew it, dye it, make it allowable (kappaṃ katvā), and then spread the kathina. If he wishes to spread the kathina with an outer robe (saṅghāṭi), the old saṅghāṭi should be relinquished (paccuddharitabbā), the new saṅghāṭi should be determined (adhiṭṭhātabbā), and the utterance should be made: "With this saṅghāṭi I spread the kathina." If he wishes to spread the kathina with an upper robe (uttarāsaṅga), the old uttarāsaṅga should be relinquished, the new uttarāsaṅga should be determined, and the utterance should be made: "With this uttarāsaṅga I spread the kathina." If he wishes to spread the kathina with a lower robe (antaravāsaka), the old antaravāsaka should be relinquished, the new antaravāsaka should be determined, and the utterance should be made: "With this antaravāsaka I spread the kathina."
That bhikkhu who spreads the kathina should approach the Saṅgha, arrange his upper robe over one shoulder, raise his joined palms, and say this: "Venerable sirs, the Saṅgha's kathina has been spread; the spreading of the kathina is in accordance with the Dhamma. May you express your appreciation." Those bhikkhus who express appreciation should arrange their upper robes over one shoulder, raise their joined palms, and say this: "Friend, the Saṅgha's kathina has been spread; the spreading of the kathina is in accordance with the Dhamma; we express our appreciation."
That bhikkhu who spreads the kathina should approach several bhikkhus, arrange his upper robe over one shoulder, raise his joined palms, and say this: "Venerable sirs, the Saṅgha's kathina has been spread; the spreading of the kathina is in accordance with the Dhamma. May you express your appreciation." Those bhikkhus who express appreciation should arrange their upper robes over one shoulder, raise their joined palms, and say this: "Friend, the Saṅgha's kathina has been spread; the spreading of the kathina is in accordance with the Dhamma; we express our appreciation."
That bhikkhu who spreads the kathina should approach a single bhikkhu, arrange his upper robe over one shoulder, raise his joined palms, and say this: "Friend, the Saṅgha's kathina has been spread; the spreading of the kathina is in accordance with the Dhamma. May you express your appreciation." That bhikkhu who expresses appreciation should arrange his upper robe over one shoulder, raise his joined palms, and say this: "Friend, the Saṅgha's kathina has been spread; the spreading of the kathina is in accordance with the Dhamma; I express my appreciation."
