[1204] "Venerable sir, possessed of how many factors should a bhikkhu not suspend the exhortation (ovāda) of the bhikkhunīs?"
"Upāli, possessed of five factors a bhikkhu should not suspend the exhortation of the bhikkhunīs. Which five?
1. He is shameless (alajjī);
2. he is foolish;
3. he is not of regular standing (apakatatta);
4. he is one who speaks with the intention of making [her] fall away,
5. not with the intention of [her] emerging [from the offence].
Possessed of these five factors, Upāli, a bhikkhu should not suspend the exhortation of the bhikkhunīs.
"Possessed of five further factors too, Upāli, a bhikkhu should not suspend the exhortation of the bhikkhunīs. Which five?
1. He is one whose bodily conduct is impure;
2. he is one whose verbal conduct is impure;
3. he is one whose livelihood is impure;
4. he is foolish and incompetent;
5. he is not capable, when being examined, of giving an answer to the examination.
Possessed of these five factors, Upāli, a bhikkhu should not suspend the exhortation of the bhikkhunīs.
"Possessed of five further factors too, Upāli, a bhikkhu should not suspend the exhortation of the bhikkhunīs. Which five?
1. He is possessed of improper conduct (anācāra) by body;
2. he is possessed of improper conduct by speech;
3. he is possessed of improper conduct by body and speech;
4. he is one who abuses and reviles the bhikkhunīs;
5. he dwells associating with the bhikkhunīs in unbecoming association.
Possessed of these five factors, Upāli, a bhikkhu should not suspend the exhortation of the bhikkhunīs.
"Possessed of five further factors too, Upāli, a bhikkhu should not suspend the exhortation of the bhikkhunīs. Which five?
1. He is shameless;
2. he is foolish;
3. he is not of regular standing;
4. he is a maker of strife and a maker of quarrels;
5. he is one who does not fulfil the training.
Possessed of these five factors, Upāli, a bhikkhu should not suspend the exhortation of the bhikkhunīs."
