[1205] "Venerable sir, possessed of how many factors should a bhikkhu not undertake the exhortation (ovāda) of the bhikkhunīs?"
"Upāli, a bhikkhu possessed of five factors should not undertake the exhortation of the bhikkhunīs. Which five? He is possessed of improper conduct (anācāra) of body; he is possessed of improper conduct of speech; he is possessed of improper conduct of body and speech; he is one who abuses and reviles the bhikkhunīs; he dwells in association with the bhikkhunīs in unbecoming association. Possessed of these five factors, Upāli, a bhikkhu should not undertake the exhortation of the bhikkhunīs.
"Possessed of five further factors also, Upāli, a bhikkhu should not undertake the exhortation of the bhikkhunīs. Which five? He is shameless (alajjī); he is a fool; he is not in regular standing (apakatatta); or he is about to set out on a journey; or he is ill. Possessed of these five factors, Upāli, a bhikkhu should not undertake the exhortation of the bhikkhunīs."
