[1206] "Venerable sir, with a bhikkhu possessed of how many qualities should discussion (sākacchā) not be held?"
"Upāli, discussion should not be held with a bhikkhu possessed of five qualities. Which five? He is not possessed of the aggregate of virtue (sīlakkhandha) of one beyond training (asekha); he is not possessed of the aggregate of concentration (samādhi) of one beyond training; he is not possessed of the aggregate of wisdom of one beyond training; he is not possessed of the aggregate of liberation (vimutti) of one beyond training; he is not possessed of the aggregate of knowledge and vision of liberation (vimuttiñāṇadassana) of one beyond training. Upāli, discussion should not be held with a bhikkhu possessed of these five qualities.
"Upāli, discussion should be held with a bhikkhu possessed of five qualities. Which five? He is possessed of the aggregate of virtue of one beyond training; he is possessed of the aggregate of concentration of one beyond training; he is possessed of the aggregate of wisdom of one beyond training; he is possessed of the aggregate of liberation of one beyond training; he is possessed of the aggregate of knowledge and vision of liberation of one beyond training. He has not attained the analytical knowledge of meaning (attha-paṭisambhidā); he has not attained the analytical knowledge of dhamma (dhamma-paṭisambhidā); he has not attained the analytical knowledge of language (nirutti-paṭisambhidā); he has not attained the analytical knowledge of perspicacity (paṭibhāna-paṭisambhidā); and he does not review the mind (citta) as it is liberated. Upāli, discussion should not be held with a bhikkhu possessed of these five qualities.
"Upāli, discussion should be held with a bhikkhu possessed of five qualities. Which five? He has attained the analytical knowledge of meaning; he has attained the analytical knowledge of dhamma; he has attained the analytical knowledge of language; he has attained the analytical knowledge of perspicacity; and he reviews the mind as it is liberated.
