[1178] "Venerable sir, with a bhikkhu possessed of how many factors should the Vinaya (vinaya) not be discussed?"
"Upāli, with a bhikkhu possessed of five factors the Vinaya should not be discussed. Which five? He does not know the matter (vatthu); he does not know the origin story (nidāna); he does not know the laying down of the rule (paññatti); he does not know the wording as subsequently handed down (padapacchābhaṭṭha); he does not know the connected sequence of the discussion (anusandhivacanapatha). With a bhikkhu possessed of these five factors, Upāli, the Vinaya should not be discussed.
"Upāli, with a bhikkhu possessed of five factors the Vinaya may be discussed. Which five? He knows the matter; he knows the origin story; he knows the laying down of the rule; he knows the wording as subsequently handed down; he knows the connected sequence of the discussion.
