[1189] "Venerable sir, possessed of how many factors should a bhikkhu not conduct an examination (anuyuñjati)?" "Upāli, a bhikkhu possessed of five factors should not conduct an examination. Which five? 1. He does not know the Sutta (sutta); 2. He does not know what conforms to the Sutta (suttānuloma); 3. He does not know the Vinaya (vinaya); 4. He does not know what conforms to the Vinaya (vinayānuloma); 5. And he is not skilled in what is a valid ground and what is not a valid ground (ṭhānāṭhāna). Upāli, a bhikkhu possessed of these five factors should not conduct an examination. [Factors of a bhikkhu who may conduct an examination] "Upāli, a bhikkhu possessed of five factors may conduct an examination. Which five? 1. He knows the Sutta; 2. He knows what conforms to the Sutta; 3. He knows the Vinaya; 4. He knows what conforms to the Vinaya; 5. And he is skilled in what is a valid ground and what is not a valid ground. Upāli, a bhikkhu possessed of these five factors may conduct an examination. [Further factors of a bhikkhu who should not conduct an examination] "Upāli, possessed of five further factors also, a bhikkhu should not conduct an examination. Which five? 1. He does not know the Dhamma; 2. He does not know what conforms to the Dhamma (dhammānuloma); 3. He does not know the Vinaya; 4. He does not know what conforms to the Vinaya; 5. And he is not skilled in what precedes and what follows (pubbāpara). Upāli, a bhikkhu possessed of these five factors should not conduct an examination. [Factors of a bhikkhu who may conduct an examination] "Upāli, a bhikkhu possessed of five factors may conduct an examination. Which five? 1. He knows the Dhamma; 2. He knows what conforms to the Dhamma; 3. He knows the Vinaya; 4. He knows what conforms to the Vinaya; 5. And he is skilled in what precedes and what follows. Upāli, a bhikkhu possessed of these five factors may conduct an examination. [Further factors of a bhikkhu who should not conduct an examination] "Upāli, possessed of five further factors also, a bhikkhu should not conduct an examination. Which five? 1. He does not know the subject-matter (vatthu); 2. He does not know the origin story (nidāna); 3. He does not know the laying down of the rule (paññatti); 4. He does not know the words subsequently supplied (padapacchābhaṭṭha); 5. He does not know the sequence of connected statements (anusandhivacanapatha). Upāli, a bhikkhu possessed of these five factors should not conduct an examination. [Factors of a bhikkhu who may conduct an examination] "Upāli, a bhikkhu possessed of five factors may conduct an examination. Which five? 1. He knows the subject-matter; 2. He knows the origin story; 3. He knows the laying down of the rule; 4. He knows the words subsequently supplied; 5. He knows the sequence of connected statements. Upāli, a bhikkhu possessed of these five factors may conduct an examination. [Further factors of a bhikkhu who should not conduct an examination] "Upāli, possessed of five further factors also, a bhikkhu should not conduct an examination. Which five? 1. He does not know the offence (āpatti); 2. He does not know the origination of the offence (āpattisamuṭṭhāna); 3. He does not know the mode of commission of the offence (payoga); 4. He does not know the settlement of the offence (vūpasama); 5. He is not skilled in the adjudication of the offence. Upāli, a bhikkhu possessed of these five factors should not conduct an examination. [Factors of a bhikkhu who may conduct an examination] "Upāli, a bhikkhu possessed of five factors may conduct an examination. Which five? 1. He knows the offence; 2. He knows the origination of the offence; 3. He knows the mode of commission of the offence; 4. He knows the settlement of the offence; 5. He is skilled in the adjudication of the offence. Upāli, a bhikkhu possessed of these five factors may conduct an examination. [Further factors of a bhikkhu who should not conduct an examination] "Upāli, possessed of five further factors also, a bhikkhu should not conduct an examination. Which five? 1. He does not know the legal issue (adhikaraṇa); 2. He does not know the origination of the legal issue; 3. He does not know the mode of proceeding of the legal issue; 4. He does not know the settlement of the legal issue; 5. He is not skilled in the adjudication of the legal issue. Upāli, a bhikkhu possessed of these five factors should not conduct an examination. [Factors of a bhikkhu who may conduct an examination] "Upāli, a bhikkhu possessed of five factors may conduct an examination. Which five? 1. He knows the legal issue; 2. He knows the origination of the legal issue; 3. He knows the mode of proceeding of the legal issue; 4. He knows the settlement of the legal issue; 5. He is skilled in the adjudication of the legal issue. Upāli, a bhikkhu possessed of these five factors may conduct an examination."
