[1212] "Venerable sir, by how many modes is the Saṅgha split?" "Upāli, the Saṅgha is split by five modes. What five? By a formal act (kamma), by a recitation (uddesa), by speaking [in advocacy of a position] (voharanto), by a proclamation (anussāvana), and by the taking of voting tickets (salākagāha). By these five modes, Upāli, the Saṅgha is split."
