[1225] "Venerable sir, how many are those who are not to be venerated (avandiya)?" "Upāli, there are these five who are not to be venerated. What five? One who has entered among the houses is not to be venerated; one who has gone onto a street is not to be venerated; one who is in the dark is not to be venerated; one who is not paying attention is not to be venerated; one who is asleep is not to be venerated. These, Upāli, are the five who are not to be venerated. "There are, Upāli, another five who are not to be venerated. What five? One is not to be venerated while rice-gruel is being drunk; one is not to be venerated in the refectory; one who is turned away is not to be venerated; one whose mind is intent elsewhere is not to be venerated; one who is naked is not to be venerated. These, Upāli, are the five who are not to be venerated. "There are, Upāli, another five who are not to be venerated. What five? One who is chewing is not to be venerated; one who is eating is not to be venerated; one who is defecating is not to be venerated; one who is urinating is not to be venerated; one who has been suspended (ukkhittaka) is not to be venerated. These, Upāli, are the five who are not to be venerated. "There are, Upāli, another five who are not to be venerated. What five? One ordained later is not to be venerated by one ordained earlier; one not fully ordained is not to be venerated; a more senior bhikkhu of a different communion (nānāsaṃvāsaka) who speaks contrary to the Dhamma is not to be venerated; a woman is not to be venerated; a paṇḍaka is not to be venerated. These, Upāli, are the five who are not to be venerated. "There are, Upāli, another five who are not to be venerated. What five? One undergoing probation (pārivāsika) is not to be venerated; one deserving to be sent back to the beginning (mūlāya paṭikassanāraha) is not to be venerated; one deserving mānatta is not to be venerated; one observing mānatta is not to be venerated; one deserving rehabilitation (abbhāna) is not to be venerated. These, Upāli, are the five who are not to be venerated."
