[1226] "Venerable sir, how many are those who should be paid homage (vandiya)?"
"Upāli, there are these five who should be paid homage. What five? One ordained earlier should be paid homage by one ordained later; one of a different communion (nānāsaṃvāsaka) who is more senior and a speaker of Dhamma (dhammavādī) should be paid homage; a teacher (ācariya) should be paid homage; a preceptor (upajjhāya) should be paid homage; and in the world with its devas, with its Māra, with its Brahmā, in this generation with its ascetics and brahmins, its devas and humans, the Tathāgata, the Arahant, the Perfectly Awakened One (sammāsambuddha) should be paid homage. These, Upāli, are the five who should be paid homage."
