Upāli, Dāsaka, and Soṇaka, Siggava likewise,
with Moggalīputta as the fifth —
these were in [the land] called glorious Jambu (jambusirivhaye).
Then Mahinda, Iṭṭiya, Uttiya, and Sambala,
and the wise one named Bhadda —
these great ones (nāgā) of great wisdom
came here from Jambudīpa;
they taught the Vinaya, the Piṭaka, in Tambapaṇṇi;
they taught the five Nikāyas and the seven treatises.
Then Ariṭṭha the intelligent, and Tissadatta the wise,
Kāḷasumana the assured, and the elder named Dīgha,
and Dīghasumana the wise;
again Kāḷasumana, the elder Nāga, and Buddharakkhita,
the elder Tissa the intelligent, and the elder Deva the wise;
again Sumana the intelligent, assured in the Vinaya;
Cūḷanāga of great learning, hard to assail as an elephant;
and the one named Dhammapālita, honoured by the good in Rohaṇa;
his pupil of great wisdom, named Khema, bearer of the Tipiṭaka,
who shone forth with wisdom on the island like the king of stars (the moon);
Upatissa the intelligent, Pussadeva the great preacher;
again Sumana the intelligent, the one named Puppha, of great learning;
Mahāsīva the great preacher, skilled in the entire Piṭaka;
again Upāli the intelligent, assured in the Vinaya;
Mahānāga of great wisdom, skilled in the lineage of the true Dhamma;
again Abhaya the intelligent, skilled in the entire Piṭaka;
and the elder Tissa the intelligent, assured in the Vinaya;
his pupil of great wisdom, named Pussa, of great learning,
guarding the dispensation (sāsana), was established in Jambudīpa;
Cūḷābhaya the intelligent, assured in the Vinaya;
the elder Tissa the intelligent, skilled in the lineage of the true Dhamma;
Cūḷadeva the intelligent, assured in the Vinaya;
and the elder Sīva the intelligent, skilled in all of the Vinaya —
these great ones (nāgā) of great wisdom, knowers of the Vinaya, skilled in the path,
proclaimed the Vinaya, the Piṭaka, on the island of Tambapaṇṇi.
