[2] Where was the first pārājika laid down by that Blessed One who knows and sees, the Arahant, the Perfectly Awakened One? — It was laid down at Vesālī.
Concerning whom? — Concerning Sudinna the Kalandaputta.
On what matter? — On the matter of Sudinna the Kalandaputta engaging in sexual intercourse with his former wife.
Is there in that case a rule (paññatti), an amendment (anupaññatti), a rule laid down before an occasion had arisen (anuppannapaññatti)? — There is one rule and two amendments; there is no rule laid down before an occasion had arisen in that case.
Is it a rule applying everywhere or a rule applying to a certain region? — A rule applying everywhere.
Is it a rule common to both or a rule not common to both? — A rule common to both.
Is it a rule for one side or a rule for both sides? — A rule for both sides.
Of the five recitations of the Pātimokkha, in which is it contained, in which is it included? — It is contained in the introduction (nidāna), included in the introduction.
Through which recitation does it come up for recitation? — It comes up for recitation through the second recitation.
Of the four failures (vipatti), which failure is it? — A failure in virtue.
Of the seven classes of offenses (āpatti), to which class of offenses does it belong? — To the class of pārājika offenses.
Of the six originations of offenses, through how many originations does it originate? — It originates through one origination: it originates from body and from mind (citta), not from speech.
Of the four kinds of legal questions (adhikaraṇa), which legal question is it? — A legal question concerning an offense.
Of the seven means of settlement (samatha), by how many means of settlement is it settled? — It is settled by two means of settlement: by removal in the presence (sammukhāvinaya) and by acting upon acknowledgment (paṭiññātakaraṇa).
What therein is the discipline (vinaya)? What therein is the higher discipline (abhivinaya)? — The rule is the discipline; the analysis is the higher discipline.
What therein is the Pātimokkha? What therein is the higher Pātimokkha (adhipātimokkha)? — The rule is the Pātimokkha; the analysis is the higher Pātimokkha.
What is failure? — Non-restraint is failure.
What is success? — Restraint is success.
What is the practice? — That, having undertaken it for as long as life lasts, to the very end of breath, thinking, "I shall not do such a deed," one trains in the training rules (sikkhāpada).
Depending on how many grounds of benefit was the first pārājika laid down by the Blessed One? — Depending on ten grounds of benefit was the first pārājika laid down by the Blessed One: for the excellence of the Saṅgha, for the comfort of the Saṅgha, for the restraint of shameless persons, for the comfortable dwelling of well-behaved bhikkhus, for the restraint of taints (āsava) pertaining to the present life, for the warding off of taints pertaining to future lives, for the arousing of confidence in those [1] without confidence, for the increase of confidence in those [1] with confidence, for the endurance of the true Dhamma, and for the support of the discipline.
Who train? — Trainees (sekha) and good worldlings train.
Who have completed the training? — Arahants have completed the training.
In whom is it established? — It is established in those who desire the training.
Who bear it in mind? — Those for whom it applies, they bear it in mind.
Whose word is it? — It is the word of the Blessed One, the Arahant, the Perfectly Awakened One.
By whom was it handed down? — It was handed down by the lineage of succession.
