[25] "By that Blessed One who knows and sees, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One — where was the second undetermined rule (aniyata) laid down?" — "It was laid down at Sāvatthī." — "Concerning whom?" — "Concerning the Venerable Udāyi." — "On account of what matter?" — "On account of the matter of the Venerable Udāyi engaging in sitting in private, he alone with a woman (mātugāma) alone."
"Is there in it a laying down (paññatti), a supplementary laying down (anupaññatti), a laying down for what had not yet arisen (anuppannapaññatti)?" — "There is one laying down; a supplementary laying down and a laying down for what had not yet arisen are not found in it." — "Is it a laying down for everywhere (sabbatthapaññatti) or a laying down for a particular region (padesapaññatti)?" — "A laying down for everywhere." — "Is it a shared laying down (sādhāraṇapaññatti) or an unshared laying down (asādhāraṇapaññatti)?" — "An unshared laying down." — "Is it a laying down for one side (ekatopaññatti) or a laying down for both sides (ubhatopaññatti)?" — "A laying down for one side."
"Of the five recitations of the Pātimokkha (pātimokkhuddesa), in which is it included, in which is it comprised?" — "It is included in the introduction (nidāna), comprised in the introduction." — "By which recitation does it come up for recitation?" — "It comes up for recitation by the fourth recitation."
"Of the four failures (vipatti), which failure is it?" — "It may be failure of virtue (sīlavipatti), it may be failure of conduct (ācāravipatti)." — "Of the seven classes of offense (āpattikkhandha), which class of offense is it?" — "It may be the class of saṅghādisesa offenses, it may be the class of pācittiya offenses." — "Of the six originations of offenses (āpattisamuṭṭhāna), by how many originations does it originate?" — "It originates by three originations: it may originate from body and from mind, not from speech; it may originate from speech and from mind, not from body; it may originate from body and from speech and from mind."
"Of the four legal issues (adhikaraṇa), which legal issue is it?" — "A legal issue arising from an offense (āpattādhikaraṇa)." — "Of the seven means of settlement (samatha), by how many means of settlement is it settled?" — "It is settled by three means of settlement: it may be by resolution in the presence (sammukhāvinaya) together with acting upon acknowledgment (paṭiññātakaraṇa); it may be by resolution in the presence together with covering over as with grass (tiṇavatthāraka)."
