[469] Where was the pārājika on account of engaging in sexual intercourse laid down by that Blessed One who knows, who sees, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One? Concerning whom? On what ground? … By whom was it handed down? "Where was the pārājika on account of engaging in sexual intercourse laid down by that Blessed One who knows, who sees, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One?" — It was laid down at Vesālī. "Concerning whom?" — Concerning Sudinna Kalandaputta. "On what ground?" — On the ground that Sudinna Kalandaputta engaged in sexual intercourse with his former wife (purāṇadutiyikā). "Is there therein a laying-down (paññatti), a supplementary laying-down (anupaññatti), a laying-down for what had not yet arisen (anuppannapaññatti)?" — There is one laying-down and two supplementary layings-down; a laying-down for what had not yet arisen does not exist therein. "Is it a laying-down for everywhere, or a laying-down for a particular region?" — A laying-down for everywhere. "Is it a laying-down shared [by both bhikkhus and bhikkhunīs], or a laying-down not shared?" — A shared laying-down. "Is it a laying-down for one side, or a laying-down for both?" — A laying-down for both. "Of the five recitations of the Pātimokkha, in which is it included, in which is it comprised?" — It is included in the introduction (nidāna), comprised in the introduction. "By which recitation does it come up for recitation?" — It comes up for recitation by the second recitation. "Of the four failures (vipatti), which failure is it?" — Failure of virtue (sīlavipatti). "Of the seven classes of offences (āpattikkhandha), which class of offence is it?" — The class of pārājika offence. "Of the six origins of offences (samuṭṭhāna), by how many origins does it originate?" — It originates by one origin: it originates from body and from mind (citta), not from speech. … "By whom was it handed down?" — It was handed down by the succession [of teachers]. Upāli, and Dāsaka, Soṇaka, and likewise Siggava, with Moggaliputta as the fifth — these in [the land] called glorious Jambu. Thereafter Mahinda, Iṭṭiya, and Uttiya, and Sambala, … These nāgas of great wisdom, knowers of the Vinaya, skilled in the path, proclaimed the Vinaya, the Piṭaka, in the island of Tambapaṇṇi.
