[826] All conditioned things (saṅkhārā) are impermanent;
what is conditioned is suffering (dukkha) and non-self.
Nibbāna and designation (paññatti)
are determined to be non-self.
While the Buddha-moon has not arisen,
while the Buddha-sun has not come up,
even the mere names of those dhammas of like kind
are not known.
Having performed manifold difficult deeds,
having fulfilled the perfections (pāramī),
the great heroes arise,
become the Eye for the world together with its Brahmās;
they teach the true Dhamma (saddhamma),
which destroys suffering and brings happiness.
Aṅgīrasa, the Sakyan sage,
compassionate toward all creatures,
supreme among all beings, the lion,
taught the three Piṭakas:
the Suttanta, the Abhidhamma,
and the Vinaya of great virtue.
Thus the true Dhamma is carried on,
if the Vinaya stands—
both the Vibhaṅgas, the Khandhakas, and the Mātikās,
strung together as a garland by the thread (sutta) that is the Parivāra.
Of that very Parivāra
the origination (samuṭṭhāna) has been fixed with certainty;
the intermixture (sambheda) and the other, the source (nidāna),
are seen further on in the text.
Therefore one who loves the Dhamma, thoroughly virtuous,
should train in the Parivāra.
What is laid down in the two Vibhaṅgas
they recite on the Uposatha;
I shall declare the origination according to method—
listen to me.
That pārājika which is first, and the second thereafter,
the go-between (sañcaritta) and the admonition (anubhāsana),
and the extra robe,
the wool, the Dhamma [recited] line by line (padasodhamma),
the factual [announcement] (bhūta) together with the arrangement [to travel] (saṃvidhāna),
the thieves' [caravan] (theyya), the teaching (desanā), and the thief-woman (corī),
with [ordination] without consent (ananuññāya)—thirteen.
These thirteen methods of origination
were thought out by the wise:
those [rules] that are alike within each single origination
are seen here.
