[902] "As to these dhammas called 'legal issue (adhikaraṇa)' and 'settlement (samatha)' — are these dhammas conjoined or disjoined? And is it possible, having separated these dhammas one from another, to point out a difference between them?"
"These dhammas called 'legal issue' and 'settlement' are conjoined, not disjoined; and it is possible, having separated these dhammas one from another, to point out a difference between them."
He should be told: "Not so!" These dhammas called 'legal issue' and 'settlement' are conjoined, not disjoined; and it is not possible, having separated these dhammas one from another, to point out a difference between them. Why is that? Was it not said by the Blessed One: "Bhikkhus, there are these four legal issues and seven settlements; legal issues are settled by settlements, and settlements are settled by legal issues"? Thus these dhammas are conjoined, not disjoined, and it is not possible, having separated these dhammas one from another, to point out a difference between them.
