[949] One falls into an offence (āpatti) in two ways: one falls into it by body, or one falls into it by speech. One emerges from an offence in two ways: one emerges by body, or one emerges by speech.
There are two kinds of probation (parivāsa): probation for a concealed offence (paṭicchanna-parivāsa) and probation for an unconcealed offence (appaṭicchanna-parivāsa). There are two further kinds of probation: probation for complete purity (suddhanta-parivāsa) and combined probation (samodhāna-parivāsa).
There are two kinds of penance (mānatta): penance for a concealed offence (paṭicchanna-mānatta) and penance for an unconcealed offence (appaṭicchanna-mānatta). There are two further kinds of penance: the half-month penance (pakkha-mānatta) and combined penance (samodhāna-mānatta).
Interruption of the nights (ratticcheda) pertains to two persons: to one undergoing probation and to one undergoing penance.
