[980] An expert in the Vinaya (vinayadhara) possessed of five factors is reckoned a fool: he does not grasp the limit of his own statement; he does not grasp the limit of the other's statement; not having grasped the limit of his own statement, and not having grasped the limit of the other's statement, he carries out proceedings contrary to the Dhamma, without acknowledgment (paṭiññā). An expert in the Vinaya possessed of five factors is reckoned wise: he grasps the limit of his own statement; he grasps the limit of the other's statement; having grasped the limit of his own statement, and having grasped the limit of the other's statement, he carries out proceedings in accordance with the Dhamma, with acknowledgment. An expert in the Vinaya possessed of five further factors is reckoned a fool: he does not know an offence (āpatti); he does not know the root of an offence; he does not know the origin of an offence; he does not know the cessation of an offence; he does not know the way of practice leading to the cessation of an offence. An expert in the Vinaya possessed of five factors is reckoned wise: he knows an offence; he knows the root of an offence; he knows the origin of an offence; he knows the cessation of an offence; he knows the way of practice leading to the cessation of an offence. An expert in the Vinaya possessed of five further factors is reckoned a fool: he does not know a legal issue (adhikaraṇa); he does not know the root of a legal issue; he does not know the origin of a legal issue; he does not know the cessation of a legal issue; he does not know the way of practice leading to the cessation of a legal issue. An expert in the Vinaya possessed of five factors is reckoned wise: he knows a legal issue; he knows the root of a legal issue; he knows the origin of a legal issue; he knows the cessation of a legal issue; he knows the way of practice leading to the cessation of a legal issue. An expert in the Vinaya possessed of five further factors is reckoned a fool: he does not know the subject-matter (vatthu); he does not know the origin story (nidāna); he does not know the rule as laid down (paññatti); he does not know the supplementary rule (anupaññatti); he does not know the method of connected statements (anusandhivacanapatha). An expert in the Vinaya possessed of five factors is reckoned wise: he knows the subject-matter; he knows the origin story; he knows the rule as laid down; he knows the supplementary rule; he knows the method of connected statements. An expert in the Vinaya possessed of five further factors is reckoned a fool: he does not know the motion (ñatti); he does not know the performing of the motion; he is not skilled in what comes before; he is not skilled in what comes after; and he does not know the proper time. An expert in the Vinaya possessed of five factors is reckoned wise: he knows the motion; he knows the performing of the motion; he is skilled in what comes before; he is skilled in what comes after; and he knows the proper time. An expert in the Vinaya possessed of five further factors is reckoned a fool: he does not know what is an offence and what is not an offence; he does not know a light and a grave offence; he does not know an offence with remainder and an offence without remainder; he does not know a coarse and a non-coarse offence; and, moreover, the succession of teachers has not been well learned by him, not well attended to, not well borne in mind. An expert in the Vinaya possessed of five factors is reckoned wise: he knows what is an offence and what is not an offence; he knows a light and a grave offence; he knows an offence with remainder and an offence without remainder; he knows a coarse and a non-coarse offence; and, moreover, the succession of teachers has been well learned by him, well attended to, well borne in mind. An expert in the Vinaya possessed of five further factors is reckoned a fool: he does not know what is an offence and what is not an offence; he does not know a light and a grave offence; he does not know an offence with remainder and an offence without remainder; he does not know a coarse and a non-coarse offence; and, moreover, both Pātimokkhas have not been well handed down to him in detail, not well analyzed, not fluent in recitation, not well determined, rule by rule and detail by detail. An expert in the Vinaya possessed of five factors is reckoned wise: he knows what is an offence and what is not an offence; he knows a light and a grave offence; he knows an offence with remainder and an offence without remainder; he knows a coarse and a non-coarse offence; and, moreover, both Pātimokkhas have been well handed down to him in detail, well analyzed, fluent in recitation, well determined, rule by rule and detail by detail. An expert in the Vinaya possessed of five further factors is reckoned a fool: he does not know what is an offence and what is not an offence; he does not know a light and a grave offence; he does not know an offence with remainder and an offence without remainder; he does not know a coarse and a non-coarse offence; and he is not skilled in the deciding of a legal issue. An expert in the Vinaya possessed of five factors is reckoned wise: he knows what is an offence and what is not an offence; he knows a light and a grave offence; he knows an offence with remainder and an offence without remainder; he knows a coarse and a non-coarse offence; and he is skilled in the deciding of a legal issue.
