[989] A bhikkhu possessed of six qualities may give the full ordination (upasampadā), may give dependence (nissaya), and may have a novice (sāmaṇera) attend upon him: he is possessed of the aggregate (khandha) of virtue of one beyond training (asekha); he is possessed of the aggregate of concentration (samādhi) of one beyond training; he is possessed of the aggregate of wisdom of one beyond training; he is possessed of the aggregate of liberation (vimutti) of one beyond training; he is possessed of the aggregate of the knowledge (ñāṇa) and vision of liberation of one beyond training; and he has ten years' standing or more than ten years' standing.
A bhikkhu possessed of six further qualities may give the full ordination, may give dependence, and may have a novice attend upon him: he is himself possessed of the aggregate of virtue of one beyond training, and he encourages another to undertake the aggregate of virtue of one beyond training; he is himself possessed of the aggregate of concentration of one beyond training, and he encourages another to undertake the aggregate of concentration of one beyond training; he is himself possessed of the aggregate of wisdom of one beyond training, and he encourages another to undertake the aggregate of wisdom of one beyond training; he is himself possessed of the aggregate of liberation of one beyond training, and he encourages another to undertake the aggregate of liberation of one beyond training; he is himself possessed of the aggregate of the knowledge and vision of liberation of one beyond training, and he encourages another to undertake the aggregate of the knowledge and vision of liberation of one beyond training; and he has ten years' standing or more than ten years' standing.
A bhikkhu possessed of six further qualities may give the full ordination, may give dependence, and may have a novice attend upon him: he has faith; he has moral shame (hiri); he has moral dread (ottappa); his energy is aroused; his mindfulness is established; and he has ten years' standing or more than ten years' standing.
A bhikkhu possessed of six further qualities may give the full ordination, may give dependence, and may have a novice attend upon him: he is not deficient in virtue as regards the higher virtue (adhisīla); he is not deficient in conduct as regards the higher conduct (ajjhācāra); he is not deficient in view as regards the higher view (atidiṭṭhi); he is learned; he is wise; and he has ten years' standing or more than ten years' standing.
A bhikkhu possessed of six further qualities may give the full ordination, may give dependence, and may have a novice attend upon him: he is capable of nursing, or of having another nurse, a pupil (antevāsika) or co-resident (saddhivihārika) who is ill; of dispelling, or of having another dispel, discontent (anabhirati) that has arisen;⁽¹⁾ of allaying by means of the Dhamma, or of having another allay,⁽²⁾ remorse (kukkucca) that has arisen; he knows an offence (āpatti); he knows the emergence from an offence; and he has ten years' standing or more than ten years' standing.
A bhikkhu possessed of six further qualities may give the full ordination, may give dependence, and may have a novice attend upon him: he is capable of training a pupil or co-resident in the training pertaining to proper conduct (abhisamācārikā sikkhā); of guiding him in the training fundamental to the holy life (ādibrahmacariyikā sikkhā); of guiding him in the higher Dhamma (abhidhamma); of guiding him in the higher Vinaya (abhivinaya); of dissuading him, by means of the Dhamma, from a wrong view (diṭṭhigata) that has arisen; and he has ten years' standing or more than ten years' standing.
A bhikkhu possessed of six further qualities may give the full ordination, may give dependence, and may have a novice attend upon him: he knows an offence; he knows what is not an offence; he knows a light offence; he knows a grave offence; both Pātimokkhas have been well handed down to him in detail, well analyzed, well mastered in recitation, and well determined rule by rule and in every detail; and he has ten years' standing or more than ten years' standing.
