[996] Seeing eight advantages, one should not suspend that bhikkhu for not seeing an offence. Seeing eight advantages, that offence should be confessed even out of faith in others. There are eight [offences requiring admonition] up to the third time (yāvatatiyaka). One corrupts families in eight ways. There are eight matrices (mātikā) for the arising of robe-cloth. There are eight matrices for the removal of the kaṭhina [privileges]. There are eight drinks. Overcome and with mind overwhelmed by eight bad qualities (asaddhamma), Devadatta is bound for a state of deprivation, bound for hell, fixed there for an aeon, incurable. There are eight worldly conditions (lokadhammā). There are eight heavy rules (garudhammā). There are eight [offences] to be acknowledged (pāṭidesanīya). False speech has eight factors. There are eight factors of the uposatha. There are eight qualities of a messenger. There are eight observances concerning members of other sects (titthiya). There are eight astounding and amazing qualities in the great ocean. There are eight astounding and amazing qualities in this Dhamma and Discipline. There are eight [ways food is] not left over. One should rise up for eight; a seat should be given to eight. The female lay follower asked for eight boons. A bhikkhu possessed of eight factors may be agreed upon as an exhorter of bhikkhunīs. There are eight advantages for one who is expert in the Vinaya. There are eight "at most" [rules]. A bhikkhu against whom the act [of censure] for aggravated misconduct (tassapāpiyasikā) has been carried out should conduct himself properly with respect to eight things. There are eight illegitimate suspensions of the Pātimokkha; there are eight legitimate suspensions of the Pātimokkha.
