[14] 'Or whereas some honored ascetics and brahmins, while eating food given in faith (saddhādeyya), remain devoted to practices of adornment and beautification such as these — namely: anointing the body with pastes, massaging, bathing, rubbing the limbs; the use of mirrors, eye ointment, garlands and unguents, face powder, face cream, bracelets, head-ornaments for binding the hair, walking-sticks, ornamental tubes (cases), swords, sabres, parasols, fancy embroidered sandals, turbans, gems, yak-tail fans, and long-fringed white garments — the ascetic Gotama refrains from devotion to such practices of adornment and beautification.' Thus indeed, bhikkhus, might an ordinary person speak when speaking praise of the Tathāgata.
