[142] Now at that time the brahmin Pokkharasāti was dwelling at Ukkaṭṭhā — a place teeming with living beings, abounding in grass, wood, and water, rich in grain, a royal domain given by King Pasenadi of Kosala as a royal grant, a brahmadeyya.
The brahmin Pokkharasāti heard: "Truly, sirs, the ascetic Gotama, the Sakyan son, gone forth from the Sakyan clan, wandering on tour among the Kosalans together with a great Saṅgha of bhikkhus, some five hundred bhikkhus, has arrived at Icchānaṅgala and is dwelling at Icchānaṅgala, in the Icchānaṅgala forest grove. Now concerning that worthy Gotama such a fair report of fame has spread abroad: 'Thus indeed is he, that Blessed One: an arahant, perfectly enlightened, accomplished in true knowledge (vijjā) and conduct, fortunate (sugata), knower of the world, unsurpassed trainer of persons to be tamed, teacher of gods and humans, enlightened, blessed.' Having realized it himself by direct knowledge, he makes known this world with its gods, with its Māras, with its Brahmās, this generation with its ascetics and brahmins, with its gods and humans. He teaches the Dhamma that is good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, with its meaning and its phrasing; he proclaims the holy life (brahmacariya) entirely complete and pure. Good indeed is the sight of arahants such as this."
