[149] "Once upon a time, Ambaṭṭha, King Okkāka, wishing to divert the kingship to the son of that chief queen who was dear and beloved to him, banished the elder princes from the realm—Ukkāmukha, Karakaṇḍa, Hatthinika, and Sinipura. Banished from the realm, they made their dwelling in a great grove of sāka trees on the bank of a lotus pond on the slopes of the Himalayas. For fear of corrupting their line of birth, they cohabited with their own sisters.
"Then, Ambaṭṭha, King Okkāka addressed his ministers and members of his assembly: 'Where, good sirs, are the princes now living?'
"'Sire, there is a great grove of sāka trees on the bank of a lotus pond on the slopes of the Himalayas; the princes are now living there. For fear of corrupting their line of birth, they cohabit with their own sisters.'
"Then, Ambaṭṭha, King Okkāka uttered this inspired utterance (udāna): 'Able (sakyā) indeed, sirs, are the princes! Supremely able (paramasakyā) indeed, sirs, are the princes!' From that time on, Ambaṭṭha, the Sakyans have been known by that name; and he was the forefather of the Sakyans.
"Now King Okkāka, Ambaṭṭha, had a slave-woman named Disā. She gave birth to a son named Kaṇha. As soon as he was born, Kaṇha spoke: 'Wash me, mother! Bathe me, mother! Free me, mother, from this impurity—I shall be of benefit to you!' Just as, Ambaṭṭha, people nowadays recognize goblins (pisāca) as "goblins," so too, Ambaṭṭha, at that time people recognized goblins as "kaṇhas" (black ones). They said: 'This one spoke as soon as he was born—a kaṇha is born! A goblin is born!' From that time on, Ambaṭṭha, the Kaṇhāyanas have been known by that name; and he was the forefather of the Kaṇhāyanas.
"Thus, Ambaṭṭha, when you recollect your ancient name and clan on your mother's and father's side, the Sakyans turn out to be the sons of the masters, while you are the son of a slave-woman of the Sakyans."
