[155] Then the Blessed One addressed the young man Ambaṭṭha: "What do you think, Ambaṭṭha? Suppose here a khattiya youth were to cohabit with a brahmin maiden, and in consequence of their cohabitation a son were born. Would that son, born of the khattiya youth and the brahmin maiden, receive a seat or water among the brahmins?"
"He would receive them, worthy Gotama."
"And would the brahmins feed him at an offering for the dead (sadda/saddha), at an offering of a dish of milk-rice (thālipāka), at a sacrifice, or at a feast for guests?"
"They would feed him, worthy Gotama."
"And would the brahmins teach him the hymns (mantas), or not?"
"They would teach him, worthy Gotama."
"And would he be kept from the women, or not?"
"He would not be kept from them, worthy Gotama."
"And would the khattiyas anoint him with the khattiya consecration?"
"Certainly not, worthy Gotama."
"Why is that?"
"Because, worthy Gotama, he is unqualified on his mother's side."
