[156] "What do you think, Ambaṭṭha? Suppose here a brahmin youth were to cohabit with an aristocrat (khattiya) maiden, and in consequence of their cohabitation a son were born. Would the son born of the aristocrat maiden by the brahmin youth receive a seat or water among the brahmins?"
"He would receive them, worthy Gotama."
"And would the brahmins feed him at an offering for the dead (saddha), at an offering of a dish of milk-rice (thālipāka), at a sacrifice, or at a feast for guests?"
"They would feed him, worthy Gotama."
"And would the brahmins teach him the hymns (manta) or not?"
"They would teach him, worthy Gotama."
"And would he be barred from their women, or not barred?"
"He would not be barred, worthy Gotama."
"And would the aristocrats anoint him with the aristocratic consecration as king?"
"Certainly not, worthy Gotama."
"Why is that?"
"Because, worthy Gotama, he is not properly born on his father's side."
