[164] Furthermore, Ambaṭṭha, some ascetic or brahmin here, not attaining this unsurpassed accomplishment in true knowledge (vijjā) and conduct, and not managing to subsist on fallen fruit, takes a spade and basket and plunges into the forest wilderness, thinking: "I shall subsist on tubers, roots, and fruits." He succeeds only in becoming an attendant of one accomplished in true knowledge and conduct. This, Ambaṭṭha, is the second cause of loss (apāyamukha) with respect to this unsurpassed accomplishment in true knowledge and conduct.
