[172] Now at that time the brahmin Pokkharasāti, having risen and come out, was sitting in his own park together with a large company of brahmins, waiting just for the young student Ambaṭṭha. Then the young student Ambaṭṭha set out for his own park. He went by carriage as far as the ground allowed for carriages, then descended from the carriage and approached the brahmin Pokkharasāti on foot. Having approached, he saluted the brahmin Pokkharasāti and sat down to one side. As the young student Ambaṭṭha was seated to one side, the brahmin Pokkharasāti said this to him: "Well, dear Ambaṭṭha, did you see that worthy Gotama?"
"We did see that worthy Gotama, sir."
"Well, dear Ambaṭṭha, does the report that has gone abroad concerning that worthy Gotama accord with what he really is, and not otherwise? Is that worthy Gotama indeed such a one, and not otherwise?"
"Sir, the report that has gone abroad concerning that worthy Gotama accords with what he really is, and not otherwise; that worthy Gotama is indeed such a one, and not otherwise. And that worthy Gotama is endowed with the thirty-two marks of a great man (mahāpurisalakkhaṇa), complete and not incomplete."
"But, dear Ambaṭṭha, did you have any conversation at all with the ascetic Gotama?"
"Sir, I did have some conversation with the ascetic Gotama."
"But in what way, dear Ambaṭṭha, did your conversation with the ascetic Gotama proceed?"
Then the young student Ambaṭṭha reported to the brahmin Pokkharasāti the whole of the conversation he had had with the Blessed One.
