[173] When this was said, the brahmin Pokkharasāti said to the young man Ambaṭṭha: "Alas for you, our fine little scholar! Alas for you, our fine little man of great learning! Alas for you, our fine little master of the three Vedas! With such a 'well-wisher' as this, sir, a man might, on the breaking up of the body, after death, arise in a place of loss, a bad destination, a state of ruin, hell. It was precisely because you, Ambaṭṭha, assailed the worthy Gotama again and again in this way that the worthy Gotama in turn brought up point after point against us. Alas for you, our fine little scholar! Alas for you, our fine little man of great learning! Alas for you, our fine little master of the three Vedas! With such a 'well-wisher' as this, sir, a man might, on the breaking up of the body, after death, arise in a place of loss, a bad destination, a state of ruin, hell."
Angry and displeased, he knocked the young man Ambaṭṭha over with his very foot, and he wished to go that very moment to see the Blessed One. Then those brahmins said to the brahmin Pokkharasāti: "Sir, it is far too late today to go to see the ascetic Gotama. Tomorrow the worthy Pokkharasāti will go to see the ascetic Gotama."
