[177] Then the brahmin Pokkharasāti — having seen the Dhamma, attained the Dhamma, understood the Dhamma, fathomed the Dhamma, having crossed over doubt (vicikicchā), free from uncertainty, having attained self-confidence, independent of others in the Teacher's dispensation (sāsana) — said this to the Blessed One: "Excellent, Master Gotama! Excellent, Master Gotama! Just as, Master Gotama, one might set upright what has been overturned, or reveal what has been concealed, or point out the path to one who has gone astray, or hold up an oil lamp in the darkness so that those with eyes may see forms — even so has the Dhamma been made clear by Master Gotama in manifold ways. I, together with my sons, my wives, my retinue, and my ministers, go for refuge to Master Gotama, and to the Dhamma, and to the Saṅgha of bhikkhus. May Master Gotama remember me as a lay follower (upāsaka) who has gone for refuge from this day forth for as long as life lasts. And just as Master Gotama visits the other families of lay followers in Ukkaṭṭhā, even so may Master Gotama visit the family of Pokkharasāti. There, those young brahmin men or young brahmin women who will pay homage to Master Gotama, or rise up before him, or offer him a seat or water, or gain confidence in their minds toward him — that will be for their welfare and happiness for a long time." "That is well said, brahmin."
