[19] Or again he might say: "Whereas some honourable ascetics and brahmins, while enjoying food given in faith, make their living by a debased art (tiracchānavijjā) such as this, by wrong livelihood (micchājīva) — that is to say: divining by the limbs, divining by omens, divining by portents, interpreting dreams, divining by marks, divining from cloth gnawed by mice; the fire oblation, the ladle oblation, the oblation of husks, the oblation of rice-bran, the oblation of rice grains, the oblation of ghee, the oblation of oil, the oblation from the mouth, the oblation of blood; the science of limbs, the science of building sites, the science of fields, siva-lore, spirit-lore, earth-lore, snake-lore, poison-lore, scorpion-lore, rat-lore, bird-lore, crow-lore; predicting the span of life, charms of protection against arrows, and interpreting the cries of beasts — the ascetic Gotama refrains from wrong livelihood by debased arts such as these." Thus indeed, bhikkhus, might an ordinary person (puthujjana), speaking praise of the Tathāgata, speak.
