[210] "Then, brahmin, before the sacrifice the brahmin high priest taught the three modes (vidhā) to King Mahāvijita:
'While his majesty the king is performing the great sacrifice, some regret (vippaṭisāra) might arise: "Alas, a great mass of my wealth will be lost!" His majesty the king should not entertain such regret.
While his majesty the king is performing the great sacrifice, some regret might arise: "Alas, a great mass of my wealth is being lost!" His majesty the king should not entertain such regret.
While his majesty the king is performing the great sacrifice, some regret might arise: "Alas, a great mass of my wealth has been lost!" His majesty the king should not entertain such regret.'
These, brahmin, are the three modes that the brahmin high priest taught to King Mahāvijita before the sacrifice."
