[228] Then, brahmin, the aristocrat vassals of both town and country, the ministers and councillors of both town and country, the well-to-do brahmins of both town and country, and the wealthy householders of both town and country, taking abundant wealth, approached King Mahāvijita and said this: "Sire, this abundant wealth has been brought here dedicated to Your Majesty alone; may Your Majesty accept it."
"Enough, good sirs. This abundant wealth of mine too has been amassed through righteous taxation. Let that wealth be yours; and take away even more from here."
Refused by the king, they withdrew to one side and deliberated together thus: "It would not be fitting for us to take this wealth back again to our own homes. King Mahāvijita is performing a great sacrifice. Come now, let us become his auxiliary sacrificers."
